To make a Blooket game set well, the interface is the easy part. What separates a set that produces useful data from one that produces noise is the questions inside it — and that is what this guide focuses on.

Three Ways to Build a Set
1. Import from a spreadsheet (fastest)
Write the questions in a spreadsheet, then bulk import. For anything over ten questions this is dramatically faster than typing into the web form, and it means your questions exist somewhere you can reuse, sort and share with a colleague.
2. Duplicate and edit (second fastest)
Find a public set close to your topic, copy it, then fix the parts that are wrong for your class. Editing an existing set is far quicker than authoring from nothing, and it also shows you how other teachers phrase questions on your topic.
3. Build from scratch (slowest, sometimes necessary)
Only worth it for a topic nobody else has covered, or when you want the questions to match your exact wording.
How Many Questions?
- Starter or plenary: 8–12 questions.
- Full lesson activity: 20–25.
- Revision set for homework: 30–40, because students play at their own pace.
Sets much longer than that rarely get finished in a live round, and the questions at the end never get seen.
Writing Questions That Test Something
The distractors are the assessment
This is the point most sets miss. A question with one correct answer and three obviously silly options tests nothing except reading. The wrong answers should be the actual misconceptions your students have.
If you teach the topic, you already know them: the sign error, the units mix-up, the two dates students always swap. Those make the distractors.
Keep the stem short
Students read the question on a small screen under time pressure. A three-line question means the slower readers never get to the answer, and you have measured reading speed instead of subject knowledge.
Mind the reading level
Related but distinct: a question that is hard because of unfamiliar vocabulary is testing vocabulary. Fine if that is the goal, misleading if it is not.
Use multiple correct answers deliberately
Blooket supports more than one correct answer. Used well, this is the closest a quiz format gets to a “select all that apply” question and it is much harder to guess.
Images should carry information
A diagram, a graph, a map, a source extract — all worth the load time. A decorative stock photo just slows the round.
Structuring the Set
- Start easy. The first two questions should be answerable by everyone. Students who get the first one wrong disengage quickly.
- Build difficulty gradually, but do not save all the hard ones for the end where nobody reaches them.
- Mix recall and application. Pure recall sets produce high scores and tell you very little.
- Shuffle unless order matters. If question 7 depends on question 6, turn shuffling off.
Naming and Organising
Boring, and it saves hours by term three:
- Specific titles. “Y9 Ionic Bonding — Revision” beats “Chemistry Quiz 3”.
- Consistent naming so sets sort sensibly in a list.
- Description field with the year group and unit, so a colleague can tell what it is for.
- Private by default unless you specifically want the set discoverable.
Test the Set Before the Lesson
Two minutes that saves ten:
- Host it in a private browser window and play a few questions yourself.
- Check images actually load and are readable at student screen size.
- Check no question has two answers that are both defensible — the fastest way to lose a class is an argument about a wrong “correct” answer.
- Check the length is realistic for your slot.
Reusing and Sharing
- Duplicate a set before adapting it for a different year group, rather than editing the original.
- Keep the spreadsheet source. Rebuilding from a spreadsheet is trivial; recovering from a deleted set is not.
- Sharing within a department works best from the spreadsheet rather than the platform — everyone can edit it, and it survives platform changes.
Set Quality vs Game Mode
Worth being clear about the trade-off: Blooket’s game modes put a lot of game between the student and the question. That is excellent for engagement and it means a lucky student can beat a knowledgeable one.
If you want engagement, that is a feature. If you want assessment data, assign the set as homework instead of hosting it live — no time pressure, no luck, and a report that reflects understanding. Both uses are legitimate; the mistake is expecting one to deliver the other.
